Huskies Pay a Visit to Sunnymead Elementary in Hillsborough, NJ, February 22th, 2001
On Thursday, February 22, several volunteer members of Tails of the Tundra and their Huskies paid a visit to Sunnymead Elementary School in Hillsborough, NJ. The Sunnymead School Mascot is the Siberian Husky.
The group was invited to speak by Linda Gross, Sunnymead School Principal. The students, who attend grades K through 5, were divided into small groups. Individual Tails of the Tundra members spoke to each group about how to safely approach a strange dog, the responsibilities of dog ownership, the things that make Siberian Huskies such a unique breed, and the role of rescue groups like Tails of the Tundra.
Attending from Tails of the Tundra were Scott Bluhm with Rudi, Sandy Koehler with Denali, Cindy and Gerry Hess with Kiska and Grady, and Bob and Betty Ann Baker with Shadow. Each presenter spoke with four different groups of students for about 45 minutes each. Students were given an opportunity to practice what they had learned by meeting the dog whose owner was speaking to them. This is the part the dogs especially loved!
For several weeks prior to the visit, students were given an opportunity to contribute money and items such as dog food, treats and toys that could be used by foster homes. These filled several large cardboard boxes and were greatly appreciated. The dogs were so happy to see so many biscuits and treats!
Mrs. Gross called several days after the visit to tell us how much the students enjoyed it, and that they were still talking about it. Everyone had a wonderful time. You can find more information about Sunnymead School at their website.
To all the kids at Sunnymead Elementary school: Thank you for letting us come out and visit with you. We had so much fun and hope to come out again soon. We can't thank you enough for all the hard work you put into raising donations, sending us cards and donating the food to our Siberian friends who need it. We love you! Husky hugs and Kisses from the four-legged crew: Rudi, Denali, Kiska, Grady, and Shadow.
