Success Stories: Our Dogs

Fabian found his fur-ever home on Saturday August 15th, 2009.

So how does a cute puppy like this end up in rescue? Well it starts with a breeder who sold the puppy to a Truck driver at 6 weeks old. Aside from 6 weeks old being WAY too young to leave his mom and siblings, a puppy isn't very good at holding their potty for long drives and living in a truck. So he was turned him over to rescue.

The TOTTSHR foster home immediately got this boy on track with getting him LOTS of good socialization and the search was on for a home that was going to continue that crucial work.

On August 15, 2009 Fabian met his new family with big brother Husky Jack and his new dad Fred and mom Arielle and of course Isabel the cat!.

Update on August 17th:

Day three and we’re all having a blast! Ollie has only had one accident, and no number 2’s in the house. He learned “sit” between last night and this morning, with the help of some friends we had over last night for game night. He met: Yuui (Shiba Inu), Ando (French Shepherd), Frank (Aussie Cattle).

When it was treat time, all the other dogs know to sit and wait for their people to give them treats. By the third round of treats, Ollie was sitting on command. He now has a verbal and hand command, and is learning to watch my face for direction.

All the other dogs like him, and tread very lightly as he bites their ankles. His puppy bites are almost nonexistent, as the other dogs are correcting this. He’s socializing very well, and is learning the hierarchy in our pack. It’s so great to watch him learn how to communicate with the other dogs! He’s now using his new people (doggy?) skills to meet other dogs on the street without annoying them.

I’m going to try and capture the correction interaction between he and Jack, it’s priceless! If Ollie chews furniture or hands and feet, Jacks howls. Ollie immediately sits, no matter where he is! He’s a good boy, and smart too! (hopefully he won’t be too smart for his own good!)

It’s been blazing hot, and so we’re not outside too long during the day. Tonight after dinner we’re going to the park for some more socializing and his new favorite game: fetch!

Update August 26th:

Ollie is wonderfully well behaved and doing well socially. He knows sit, stay, no, get up (increase walking speed on leash) and wait. When a strange dog approaches, he now knows to sit and wait for the dog to posture so he can approach. The only speed bump is the roundworm we found in his stool. We're at the vet right now getting treatment. He's ok, and has no idea he's a wormy butt! I filled in responses to your questions below. Thanks for checking on us!

SO.... coming up on two weeks.. any concerns? issues?
Just the roundworm.

How many dogs do you think he has met so far?
Ollie has met over 50 dogs, and has 4 regular playmates.

How many new people?
Hundreds!

How many have fallin' in love with him?
Too many to count! All my neighbors are in love! I'm thinking about a tip jar soon.

Has he been guardy about food or treats with people?
No guarding at all, even toys. He shares all.

Has he been guardy about food or treats with other dogs?
No guarding, although all the other dogs give him a wide berth while he eats treats; Jack protects him.

Any regrets?
Only that I couldn't adopt all of your dogs!

What is Ollie's favorite thing to do?
Ollie loves to meet other dogs! Aside from that, he has a plush lamb that he sleeps with. He just learned how to mount it too; and is now learning about dominant mounting behavior and its appropriateness. (The other dogs are all too happy to teach this.)

How is Isabel?
Isabel has warmed up to him. She won't play, but is now interacting with him w/o aggression.

How is Jack?
Jack has accepted ollie as a subordinate, and actually protects him.

How is Arielle?
She's great. She avidly reads about huskies (including the tott book) and is respnding well to my training. (Haha)
